Van Horebeek shows speed in Lierop

31/08/2009

Jeremy Van Horebeek has experienced mixed results at the 14th round of the MX2 FIM World championships held in Lierop over the weekend.  Good weather conditions and a strong turnout of spectators (18.000 over the weekend)  set the scene for a some exciting racing.

Nursing a mechanical problem in his qualifying race, ‘the Jerre’ still managed to salvage 4th position after chasing championship contenders Musquin and Goncalves in the opening laps.

Positioned on the inside for the first MX2 moto, Van Horebeek got a reasonable jump but tried to avoid hitting another rider in the first turn and went over the bars when he connected a hay bale. Battling to restart his machine and winded from the crash  Van Horebeek opted to conserve energy for the second moto after the pack had long disappeared into the forest section.

Grabbing a good start in moto 2, ‘Jerre’ quickly moved into fourth spot but lost time to the leading trio who were setting a faster race pace.  By the half way point, Van Horebeek finally settled into a steady race rhythm and looked relaxed on the demanding circuit. He slowly edged away at the gap in front and with a last lap push he closed down a tiring Goncalves to finish fourth.

“I expected a better result in front of my fans” explained Van Horebeek.  “I know I have the speed, I just need a little more luck and to put two strong motos together.   I was losing time to the leaders in the second moto so I tried to relax and found some good lines and then I could put in good lap times and felt strong towards the end of the moto.  Lierop is a difficult track but I enjoy the technical aspects about it. I’m looking forward to coming back here next year.”

The final round of the MX2 world championship will take place in Canelinha, Brazil in two weeks time.
